MassDEP Waste Bans

In 1990, the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) introduced its firstbans on landfilling and combustion of easy-to-recycle and toxic materials. Additional "waste bans" have been phased in over time. The following materials and items are prohibited from disposal and/or transfer for disposal in Massachusetts:

  • Construction Material & Debris: Wood, Asphalt, Brick, Concrete, Sheetrock, Gypsum or wallboard
  • CRT and Flat-Panel Displays*
  • Yard Waste*
  • Scrap Metal, metal and glass containers*
  • Mercury products*
  • Lithium products*
  • Lead batteries* 
  • Tires*
  • Hot ashes or flammable materials such as oil, gas, or paint
  • Recyclable materials*
  • White goods*
  • Mattresses & Boxsprings**
  • Textiles***

The Trash hauler enforces these items as they are on the State Waste Ban List. For more information on Waste Ban Materials please refer to MGL 310 CMR 19.017.
