Mission Statement

The overall mission of the Norwell Water Department and its personnel is to provide an adequate volume of high quality water to over 90% of the Town's residents and all the various commercial and industrial concerns within the Town. This water is used for consumption, sanitation, process and fire protection purposes. The Department supplies the required amount of water in compliance with existing State and Federal regulations regarding water quality standards and system infrastructure. The average daily water demand of consumers is 1-Million Gallons per Day (MGD) with peak demand in excess of 2MGD during summer months.

The Department is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the water distribution system, which carries the water from the source to the end user. This system presently has a conservative replacement value of over $50,000,000. The major components of this system are 80 miles of variously sized water main, 1,500 isolation gate valves, 885 fire hydrants, 11 pumping stations with associated equipment and controls and 3 water storage facilities. In addition, 3,215 individual water services are supplied by the system. Represented in this number are 2,983 residential and 232 commercial, industrial and municipal services. The Department maintains all services from the water main to the property line. The point of entry of each service where the service valve and meter are located are also maintained by the Department.

As a public water supplier, law requires regular and varied reporting to the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection and the Environmental Protection Agency. Record keeping and system documentation are carried out by the Department for the preparation of statistical and other types of reports and forwarded to the appropriate agencies. This compilation of data allows the Department to maintain compliance with existing State and Federal regulations and to develop historical data vital to future planning efforts.

Planning and budgeting to satisfy both immediate and future water demand, perform ongoing system maintenance and fund future system improvements are primary functions of the Department. At present, the Department's annual budget is in excess of $1,000,000.
